AutoCAD to 3d studio max

hi all, I'm having trouble exporting and importing files from autocad to 3ds max, the file will import but its all jagged, none of the lines are smooth and it gives the mesh thousands more polygons than it needs also it shrinks the mesh down so tiny that 3d max freaks out.
what am i doing wrong?
i think it has something to do with the exporting but I'm not sure what.
i work for an urban development company so i get given the cad files from the engineers and none of them know what to do as they dont use 3d max.
any help would be great.

I DO EXPORT AND IMPORT EVERY TIME FROM AUTOCAD, SINCE CURVES ARE MADE OF BUNCH OF LINES ALWAYS THE IMPORTED OBJECT WOULD LOOK LIKE THAT, MAYBE CHANGING THE DISPLAY RESOLUTION (ARC AND CIRCLE SMOOTHNESS, SEGMENTS IN A POLYLINE CURVE AND CONTOUR LINES PER SURFACE) IN AUTOCAD OPTIONS COULD HELP. ALSO WHEN YOU IMPORT TO MAX THERS A WINDOW  THAT GIVES YOU THE OPTION ABOUT SMOOTHNESS. BUT, NOTHING LIKE MODELING DIRECTLY IN MAX (YOUR BEST CHICE). HOPE THIS HELPS.

How do you export 3ds files from AutoCAD 2007? I know it has been an export format in pre-2006 releases but I can't find anyway to export from 2007. I'm not actually trying to import into 3ds max either. Its for Gmax but dxf just doesn't cut it anymore so i'm gonna try and use a 3ds. However, if there is a way to directly convert .dwg's into gmax files i'd be more than open to it!

Well, you can set a variable in AutoCAD, Facetres, to something around 5. Normally it is .5. You can also try the variable Facetratio. That may reduce the faces by setting it to 1. When you import the file into MAX, set the Curve Steps to 30. That should get you something smooth but not too high in polygons.

Anything else would have to be done through modifiers in MAX, like Optimize.
