Announcement from Autodesk about GMAX being cancelled !
|
|
Posted 27-Oct-2005 2:31 PM |
|
I have received an announcement from Autodesk about the cancellation of GMAX. The same message has been posted to the "News about GMAX being cancelled...true or false ?" thread. They asked me to post the message for them.
Recently we communicated a plan to cease new development on Gmax and ramp down support on the current offering; this decision was based on multiple factors and data points, including diminished interest from games publishers. Since the announcement, more partners provided feedback that we are investigating – for this reason we are happy to announce that we will extend the previously communicated November 1, 2005 deadline and continue to make Gmax available to the active community.
Our plans still include a ramp down of support on this version of Gmax – the technology does not reflect the capabilities of the current 3ds max release, nor is it ready in its current form to take advantage of pending changes to the windows operation system that will be exposed with the Vista release.
We have heard your feedback and are formulating a revised transitional plan – in the interim we are again pleased to announce that we will continue to availability of Gmax for current active users.

I'm posting this message on 3/21/2006. It appears Gmax is no longer even available to download. I guess if you didn't have it already, you can't get it now. Is there any other program that will read and export gmax files to something like 3ds? |

If I was in your place, before posting such comments that would spread panic and deception, I would first very the facts. For starters, you didn't mention where GMAX download doesn't work anymore. So this will lead people into believing that it is not available anywhere.
Second, looking at http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax where you can download GMAX. Clicking on the download button, you see that GMAX is still available.
So to every readers of this thread, GMAX IS STILL AVAILABLE. |

Royholms, I suggest you post your question in a seperate thread.
Posting non related subjects in this thread will lead to confusion. |

Deathjester, it simply means that Discreet isn't the official download site for GMAX, Turbosquid is. |

I am still not clear on this matter. I have read almost every thread based on this matter, but I am not sure if GMAX is heading for a dead end, or if there is still a small light at the end of this tunnel. Could someone please inform me? |

GMAX isn't dead.
It is still available.
There are lots of people using it.
Autodesk will update GMAX.
p.s. : Gahhees, if you don't have anything positive to bring to this community, then just don't say anything. Why did you bothered registering in the first place ? |

I've been running GMax on Vista and it works just fine. No problems at all. I wonder what they thought they'd have problems with?
Could they just updating GMax to be a parallel for a newer version of Max? And what does "no longer available as a standalone" really mean?
The original post is two years old. And no apparent information has been forthcoming from Autodesk (no surprise there). Is GMax just in limbo, now? Or are they going to wait until Vista is available to everyone before they say anything else?

My understanding is that they probably wanted to make sure there are no bugs because of Vista and that they would probably look at possible GMAX updates.
Maybe its time for me to contact them again, hummm.....

Well, did you get the chance to inquire about the future of GMAX from Autodesk, Browser_ICE?

I didn't have the chance. Seams I cannot find back the email to my Autodesk contact. The second solution is to call her directly (which I did in the past). But I had been rather busy at work to do it on my spare time.
I will try. Just need time to do it.
