Is anyone using Blender professionally?
Posted 21-Oct-2005 6:14 PM

There aren't a lot of post about Blender and I've picked up random comments on TS that suggest it isn't a viable solution to professional 3d modeling.

I've used blender now for several months and I'm a lot happer with it than the truespace program that I paid $300 for back in 97.

I'm wondering if anyone is using the program to do professional work? If so, how do you use the program in your projects?

If you have tried blender and couldn't justify using it professionally, I'd also like to hear about your experiences.

Thank you for your time.

I am,

Every model of mine is COMPLETELY built in blender from the first vertice to the last, from there i export it to Cinema 4D to render it (yafray is too slow and cant deliver the quality C4D can).

I mostly just export the mesh using the blender .lwo (lightwave) script and voila, it can import perfectly into Lightwa and cinema 4D, to get models into MAX i use the OBJ exporter.

Blender intergrates phenominally well (mesh only) with other pro applications. I dont ever see myself dropping blender completely, Its the fastest/most powerful poly modeler you can get, with lightwave 8 being a possible exception. Even Cinema 4D cant compete when it comes to polygon modelling, and i mainly do only poly modeling because i have more control over the shape and amoutn of poly's i use.

Sofar, blender has been key to my earings here on TS (which are in the hundreds of dollars already) and i can only see it getting better with constant updates and more powerful tools.

Blender may not yet be a TOTAL single solution for a 3D pro, but give it a few more years and it will, for now, its a PERFECT complimentary tool for any Pro package... i honestly would only cinsidder most other Pro Packages for Rendering and Animation, for Mesh creation, i choose blender.

Pros will always put blender down, they are (IMHO) more scared of their Pricey software being outperformed by freeware. If i one day try to model something and i simply cant do it in blender because it lacks the functionality, then i'll stop using it, till then... i'm blending like there is no tomorrow :-)

I do. I recently got a job at college in the Virtual Reality Center ( + Access Grid). I make 3d demos using Blender as a modeling tool and 3ds Max 7 for the finishing touches. As of this writing, I have not started selling models here on Turbo-Squid... nor do I plan to.

Thanks DK Designs and Howitzer86.

I'm in no position to pay for Mayia or 3DS Max and I'm leery of spending the cash on something less costly after my experisnce w/ trueSpace 3.

Crashed evey 20 min on some projects.

Truespace 3 has been released free for quite some time now.

And I agree, it's a peice of crap. I wouldn't poke the thing with a stick. Sorry to hear that you actually paid for it.

I am too.  Very happy with it.  We do need more complete export paths but obj gets it into PolyTrans and that is all it takes to output a lot of other formats.

I don't use Yrfray due to the different results you see from the internal renderer. Like another world and it's too slow to do development work.  Wish I did have a path to a free external renderer that was very good and used the native Blender materials.

We're going to use Blender to make a movie and a Star Trek fan series. When I first started using Blender most of the buttons looked like gibberish, but after reading a lot of tutorials they started to look more like English.

I just load it up & stare at it now & again & go back to my other apps such as LW & Modo, but I do see that it is a pretty good tool. It just need a completely new, and more standardised interface. It is still stuck in that 1980s Amiga style world.

The problem is, If you become proficient with Blender, say after a couple of years using it, then you might find using any other 3d app a bit alien, and that could be a big problem if you go looking for a 3d job. If you do get into it in a big way, I would suggest keeping your hand in with other apps, Gmax, Maya PLE & XSI Mod tool are all free too.

Blender really isn't used commercially to any real degree.  Max & Maya are still the big ones to learn, followed by XSI, Lighwave & others.

Sigh... why am I replying to a 2 year old thread... muppet!

We had some people describing how Blender worked in their professional workflow on the Blender Conference this month in Amsterdam. It all depends what you mean with Professional Use. Most of the pro users are contractors doing their stuff and wanting results.
We saw the guy that did a Comcast commercial in Blender using some nifty 2D techniques. Very impressive, really.

Isn't Blender a free program? You can use it to make profit? Just wondering.

Also, can I import poly meshes from Blender into say, Bryce6.0, or Poser and DAZ Studio? What would I need to make that work?

Yes Blender is a free program. The program itself is covered by the GPL. So any program changes you make have to also be released under the GPL.
Any scenes, renderings or models created by you remain your property and can, therefore, be sold.  Here's a quote from blender, org:

When is my work covered by the GPL?

Anything
you create with Blender - whether it's graphics, movies, scripts,
exported 3d files or the .blend files themselves - is your sole
property, and can be licensed or sold under any conditions you prefer.

Hello word!
I am a French student in networks, graphical art, communication...
And I think blender can be used for professional products.
The last upgrade, blender 2.46 make very easy soft bodies on clothes, and particles, etc.
You can see the last 3D free movie, "big bunny", made with blender.
http://www.bigbuckbunny.org/
or on youtube for exemple (low quality...)

I am on Linux, and I have no money^^ And I don't use crack, so blender is my favorite! But I tried Maya, and 3DS: I feel more "free" on blender because of customization on the interface, tools...

This was my first work with blender and my first 3D test.

Since this moment, I use blender blender, gimp, and inkscape to do all my work, and I completely stop to use photoshop and any adobe, macromedia,... softwares.

And now, I am trying to earn money to buy linkdu67 's 3D dragon (2$ lol) => http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/maya-duo-dragon/395563
But I have no paypal account :( and no money.
So I will try to make something usefull on this site, a lot of free models if I have time to do it, because I think this is something very interesting on this website. And if anybody like what I do, maybe I will get my 2$!

Thank you for reading, and thanks for this site.
(don't be afraid because of my english: if you don't understand something, tell me!)

Here is a list of some of the people who use Blender  profesionally http://www.blender.org/community/professionals/.
I think people kind of discriminate against blender because  its free. But, if you read up on you history. Users perchased the rights (to open source it) from Neo Geo (the original developers) because they belived in it, and believed everyone should be able to use it.

Also, Blender was used in one of the Spiderman movies (2 I think...) for storyboarding. I hope that Blender will continue to get more respect in the animation community, but I think its come along way.
