Answers from Autodesk are expected to arrive within the next few days (2-3 days), in this forum and mainly in the Autodesk questions addressed thread. I got this from Autodesk.

Some of theire comments involve download deadline extension !

Here is the reply of Autodesk (they asked me to post it).

Recently we communicated a plan to cease new development on Gmax and ramp down support on the current offering; this decision was based on multiple factors and data points, including diminished interest from games publishers. Since the announcement, more partners provided feedback that we are investigating – for this reason we are happy to announce that we will extend the previously communicated November 1, 2005 deadline and continue to make Gmax available to the active community.

Our plans still include a ramp down of support on this version of Gmax – the technology does not reflect the capabilities of the current 3ds max release, nor is it ready in its current form to take advantage of pending changes to the windows operation system that will be exposed with the Vista release.

We have heard your feedback and are formulating a revised transitional plan – in the interim we are again pleased to announce that we will continue to availability of Gmax for current active users.

As a teacher of 3D animation this announcement comes at a particularly bad time.  Exam boards here in the UK are just beginning to wake up to 3D.  Edexcel finalised details on its BTEC qualification in Game Development (Certificate and Diploma level) back in February  http://www.edexcel.org.uk/quals/nat/media-pa/dip/gamesdvpmt/  and a number of UK Colleges are already offering this qualification as of this last September - Causeway, Brighton and Hove, Kidderminster.  gmax would have been an ideal way to supplement the teaching of poly modelling and VisualMAXScript.  Students would work on max during lessons and continue with gmax at home.  Heck, we could have even used Tempest for Unit 64: Game Engines.

Yes, gmax was long in the tooth, but it was a 50MB total download, and could run on inexpensive/free second-hand hardware - everthing from Win 98 SE up to XP Home.  By contrast, Maya PLE 7 needs Win 2000 SP2+ minimum, is 157MB to download and needs more expensive hardware.

I really hope turbosquid can persuade Autodesk to let them hang on to gmax1.2

I hope you are right. I have been using Gmax for about three years now in the Trainz community. I would be willing to pay a small fee if necessary for a version for the stated new version of Windows. I hope to one day be able to afford 3DS Max but the price is out of my range for now.

Fingers Crossed,

It's a good thing they extended it. Let's just hope they can come up with a No-Registry-Required-Version of Gmax [odds of this happening is veeeerrry slim] since they no longer support it.

How often do we say that no one listens to us? Well it would appear that Autodesk have and they are to be commended for that. Thank you for keeping us informed.

Yup, I did read your post.

It seems to say that as far as new users are concerned, gmax is cancelled.  Existing users can, however, continue to use the product.

It'll be interesting to see if we can pretend to register as newbies on tuesday and still get an id.  I sure hope so.  Future max students would appreciate it.

I'm glad that AutoDesk took this wise decision. It's really nice to know that they listen to us. I guess all Command & Conquer fans are happy with it :).

Than you don't understand the nature of greed. I just downloaded demo of 3Ds max 8 and guess what? Splines don't work.!!!Every time when you try to add new verts, the 3D studio keeps expanding the spline instead adding new points.
Great work , no doubt.

I resent an email to Autodesk asking them to go to the '<a href="http://www.turbosquid.com/Forum/Index.cfm/stgAct/PostList/intThreadID/18781">Gmax cancellation ; questions adressed to Autodesk</a>' thread and start doing replies. Its been 3 weeks since they told me they would do so but nothing showed up.

By the way, to prevent this thread from geting too long for nothing, please stick with the subject of this thread. Simply puting a thread that talks about 3d max is an example of what I mean. After all, if you were a new member and wanting to read this thread, would you want to go through useless replies ?

I am daTSchikinhed from the Command & Conquer community. I've always wanted to mod Generals (which has a 3d engine) using GMAX, but my machine wasn't powerful enough to support it. Now that I have a new computer, I can. Please allow us to keep GMAX. It's become part of the C&C Community, like one of our own.

Like havoc said, at least let us download GMAX and it's proper codes. You dont have to update it.

Well there's my two cents

Ok i just found out about gmax and it sounds like a cool program and here i come to dl it and it says page cannot be found...im guessing this is due to the thing about gmax being cancelled? Well im confused now because on usa.autodesk it says there wont be any more as of october 2005 but then on the one post it says something about extending the november 2005 deadline..does this mean since november it was no longer being able to be downloaded or is there still a way to dl the program?

Nezgib, there was an official statement from Autodesk an official statement from Autodesk (owner of GMAX) and a reply too. It said the cancellation scheduled in November was postponed until Dec-31 2005. It also said something about possible changes for GMAX. So cross your fingers because GMAX might come back even better.

I'm just waiting a few more days to give Autodesk and Discreet a chance to post any meaningfull news about this. If not, I'll have to contact them again.

I'm from the X3 modding community. It seems that many of the people there also use gmax and they reccomended it. I dl gmax 1.2 and regestered with Turbo Squid, waiting for the reg code to be e-mailed to me. It has now been 3 days and still no e-mail. Is this a leftover from 2005 when people could still get a reg code? I do hope Autodesk realises that a little goodwill can buy ALOT of good faith in them and thier newly accuired products. I will definately forgo getting a pirated copy of max6 or 7 if they reactivate this product.

For your registration problem, since you subscribed as a Turbosquid member, just go to <A href="http://www.turbosquid.com/support">http://www.turbosquid.com/support</A> and click the GMAX link. It will give you a registration code right there.

I am just copy/pasting from another post I did :

The problem is that they do not want to forget about GMAX. I had a small email exchange with Autodesk this week. GMAX will continue to be available for all current Operating System. But since we all know that a new Windows version is coming (Vista), it is bound to cause changes needed to GMAX to be able to run on it. But until they know what kind of changes they must put in, they haven't got a clue into the extent of the work needed, nor the kind of ressource for it. I wouldn't be surprise if Microsoft releases the infos for all developers only when Vista is out.

Thanks BrowserIce. I tried to say just that thing earlier this month. My cousin works for Microsoft and recently sat down at lunch with Bill himself! Being in the newspaper bizz; I get to know alot of VIP sorts. I know plenty of other twists coming too. TS's prices are going to be to high for little modding Bobby this year, but 3Dcommune, Renderosity and a few other communities, have more reasonable prices.

Who do you think will get all the new business, about to dawn on the gaming world? It will be where these game modders hang out , when they purchase new models and textures and it doesn't seem that TS is their hanging place.

Like I tried to say here before; If autodesk is a publicly traded stock share, we all would be wise to invest soon.

Yep, I have been comparing my newsletters and sales being offered in them, etc. to Turbo Squids recent newsletter and prices. Turbo Squid is not only higher pricing, but extremely higher than any others!

DAZ models for poser and DFX, Obj. textures; they all are very low priced, compared to models and textures here at TS?!

Of course this above, is just a matter of opinion slinging.
