NEWS : Gmax is waiting for Microsoft WinV.

[update: start]

June-21 2006 ==> GMAX ISN"T BEING CANCELLED. AUTODESK IS WAITIN ON MICROSOFT TO UPDATE GMAX TO THE NEW WINDOWS THAT IS COMING THIS FALL.

[update : finished]

To my surprise, I am reading this morning on the Discreet site the following news.

Product Information

As of October 6, 2005, Autodesk will no longer offer Gmax® software as a stand-alone product. If you are interested in other 3D animation, modeling, and rendering applications from Autodesk please check out Autodesk® 3ds Max® software. You can download a free 30-day trial, view product demonstrations, read customer success stories, and get more information about this powerful, versatile product.

Sadly, this seams like an official statement about GMAX being cancelled but there is only one part of that news which is a bit odd. The "as a stand-alone product" part makes me wonder. Do they mean that GMAX is still available through some other package or form ?

I will get to the bottom of this and get back to you guys. We, the moderators, were not informed of this.

So in the mean time, DO NOT SPREAD PANIC ABOUT THIS UNTIL I HAVE CLEARED THIS OUT !

This is a strange idea but you could buy it off them?

or you can download it here but not at Autodesk?

But regstration keys are no longer avialable.

This is, indeed, a sad day. And, I hate to say it - but it's also an invitation to piracy of a commercial product.

I have 2 means of geting answers on this :

1) I can have a meeting face to face with Discreet's Vice President of GMAX Developement but that can only be in 2-3 weeks because he just left the office for business purposes and will be back in 1-2 weeks. It would take an additional week before I can meet him.

2) On the VP's suggestion, I can write to an Autodesk's contact and ask him/her. Answers could come up in about one week or so (unless him/her have a high email trafic).

You guys will have to decide which one I do. I will wait until Friday to see what the majority wants. The quickest way is #2 but then again ...

I'm thinking the decision came from Autodesk and not Discreet (I could be wrong).

Also, if you guys want to have TurboSquid's position on this, I could always ask them. Tell me.

Again, I am not fully certain that GMAX will no longer be available becuase how they announced it. So there might be hope. Maybe something better is coming ?

I dont think it matters how fast we have an answer, 2-3-5 weeks doesnt makes any sense. What is important is to have an official and detailed explanation about the future of Gmax and the gamepack consept for the next 2-3 years at least.

On behalf of the Trainz Community (and Auran I guess) all I have to say is one thing....

PLEASE DON'T LET TURBO-SQUID STOP GIVING OUT COPIES!!!!

The Trainz community depends on GMAX for everything!

Please!

The NeverWinter Nights custom content community has been using this product for years! It would be a shame to loose Gmax. It only encourages piracy of 3dsmax6 or 7 which are readily available for those who want it. Gmax is a great tool for introducing people into the 3d market.

Give us news soon on the direction so I can update the NWN community.

Thanks!

P.S. Options #2 followed by option#1 if you need to force the issue.

Gmax End of Life announcement
Posted 13-Oct-2005 9:54 AM

Dear Gmax users,

I am here today to inform you that Autodesk has officially decided to end its support for the Gmax product and that their company has stopped support for it effective October 6th.

Since Turbo Squid is a valuable partner for Autodesk and we've been managing the product and community on their behalf for the past year, they've allowed us to continue to offer the Gmax download until November 1st so that we can effectively manage the transition for this now defunct product. At that point, the ability to download Gmax from our site will be removed as will the ability for users to get authorization codes for the product.

These forums will continue to operate for the community for a small period of time beyond that date, and we'll be happy to try and assist the community during that time.

Respectfully,

-=Beau

Well, Autodesk has just managed to shoot themselves in the foot.  It's not a very smart move on their part to throughly annoy companies with pockets as deep as Microsoft's.

For that matter, it is beyond stupidity to aggravate untold ten's of thousands of folks who've depended on GMax for their third-party freeware projects, not only for MSFS, but a whole range of other game devs platforms.

Since it is nothing but a CASH COW from game devs who had to pay the $'s for the licence to program and distribute the gamepacks, it is silly beyond comprehension.

Aside from which, it's not at all unlike trying to "catch the wind" or "unring the bell," since as long as someone, somewhere has a copy of FlightSimulator's CD#1, as well as the requisite 'registration workaround' available, they'll continue to use GMax for their own modeling.

Fie on the corporate monkey's at Autodesk...<phfffttt!>

Something not yet thought of, apart from the fact soon no new people will be able to use gmax, all those who currently do have it, will lose it if they ever upgrade thier comp. Since you can't re install without re registering, so not only will new users cease to exist, but progressively existing users also. So slowly, but surely, game developing, as well as those trying thier hand at 3d modeling, will die out.

Brilliant strategy i must say, hope you like dealing with higher piracy of a program worth $3500 US Autodesk, cause thats where your going now - Happy Trails. I just hope my comp doesn't break down, cause i want another few years out of gmax yet, at least untill i can afford 3ds max. Just my 2 cents (no sorry, i'm not forking out $3500)

If you back up your registry you will be able to use gmax again if you need to reinstall it.

Frankly I think this sucks as Autodesk have announced the end of a product without announcing its replacement.  Watch the cracked copies of 3ds Max spread.

This is truely sad news - especially considering we make a living creating mods using gMax. FWIW, we wouldn't mind purchasing a license to continue its use, and as an added note, it would be especially nice if Autodesk created a means to open gMax files within Max r8 (which will be used for an upcoming game in the Spring). Even if the ability to do so requires a separate purchase, it would at least allow us to continue support for the game we're currently involved and base our business on. Otherwise, we can't help but feel that our company has been royally screwed.

RE: Gmax End of Life announcement

Yesterday, I talked to an Autodesk representative on the phone. I should get an email that will repeat what I talked about with them. Phone conversation was a bit hard for me to hear as the Autodesk representative was on a cell. The volume of the conversation wasn't good so I may not have heard everything ok.

One of the arguments I have heard before and I think Autodesk repeated it, is that for the past 2 years, no new gamepacks had been created on the game company sides. So this means no money for Autodesk. Also, GMAX is very costly to maintain on the developement side (it is 3d max 4.X based and we are at 3d max 8 now !).

Overall, it seams to be related to no new clients and costly developement. Again, I will get a written confirmation as the phone discussion wasn't of a good quality so I might be wrong on a few things.

As for those that have GMAX now, if you should re-install it, you could either use the registry workaround or change your PC clock to match the registration email you got and re-enter the same registration code.

For those wanting to get GMAX before it disapears, registration should still be available at Turbosquid (I think!) via http://www.turbosquid.com/support (and click the GMAX link).

How could it be costly to maintain? They haven't spent a dime on it in years. 1.2 came out in what, 2002? For about fifty cents, they could modify the code to not ask for the reg code, or accept any reg code, and just keep it available as freeware (not public domain, there's a difference). They don't even have to distribute it, I'm sure there are plenty of other sites willing to do that. By doing so, they'd keep the good will of a large development community, foster future sales of 3ds Max to those same modellers, and not look like total greedy asses.

As for other sites hosting GMAX for downloads, I have no idea if they can. Maybe Autodesk has its saying in it to say who is allowed or not.

As for me saying the costs are high to mainting it, I am not confirming this as, like I pointed out, the phone conversation was of a poor quality. At times I couldn't quite make out what Autodesk was saying. I would rather wait for theire text version for the official confirmation.

By the way, a license just to create a gamepack is somewhere around $80,000 Cdn. I had asked Autodesk about the possibility of going Open Source just for the plugin point of view. They said something (again, waiting for confirmation) like : short term no, but who knows !

I did a search but cannot find anymore on the registry work around which didn't result in a dead end. Since we can't register, when i move to a new comp that work around will be my only hope of being able to continue and complete existing models and generally having fun working in 3d. Can someone direct me to that fix or send me it to my email - me_262a_2a@hotmail.com. Thanks

Oh and one more thing, turbosquid will wait a month then also kill off thier gmax support, does this mean they will not support ppl uploading gmax models anymore?

This really sucks because I just purchased the G-MAX BIBLE for $30.00 plus shipping,it was on sale last week when I ordered it from Amazon.com. It also came with a CD which included the lastest G-MAX which I had already. My question is if you saved you registration KEYCODE and you had to reinstall wouldn't your KEYCODE work without having to go on-line? I thought once you were issued a KEYCODE then when you reinstalled the product it would reconize the assigned KEYCODE that was given to you during your past registration process.

I`m from the command&conquer mod community.
I had in mind of putting gmax up for download with the C&C GamePack Pre-Installed.
EA already released Renegade, Generals (+Expansion) and Lord Of The Rings:Battle For Middle Earth. The problem is that the current gamepack supports only Renegade and Generals (LOTR has some changes in the format) and GmaX is the only software we have for models. Banning the gmax distribution will 'kill' modding, because newbie modders wont have a tool for modeling and oldbies sooner or later will leave the community in favour of other games/real life.

Inst there a way to talk Autodesk into allowing distribution?
