Does anyone still do modeling in AutoCAD
Posted 22-Jun-2005 2:10 AM

I'm an old AutoCAD user from version 10 DOS. I still use CAD for 90% of my modeling work for accuracy and simply because I know the 3D solid modeling inside out. I also use 3D Studio mAX for rendering and animation work and can get some pretty good results. No one has posted anything here yet so I guess I should be the first. If anyone else is an AutoCAD user out there lets hear from you and see what you are doing.

Hi. Yeah that's cool. Finaly someone did it. Thanks. I'm not using AutoCAD as much as i would love to have it, but instead i'm using Bentley's PowerDraft Academic Version for edu. It's worth all the money having Architectural Desktop I guess. Bentley ain't that bad but i think not as good as Autodesk.

I use AutoCAD to do all of my modeling. I like making thingfs to scale and exact, most of the time I need to take blueprints from my models. I use 3D max 7.5 for texturing and animation. I use Alias ImageStudio 2 for texturing and still rendering. The lighting is SO much easier in Imagestudio. Ive used AutoCAD since release 12 DOS and have worked my way up to a full blown .NET customized version of 2006. My boss cant even use my computer cause he doesnt know how to work everything :)

I use it occasionally, but I use inventor a lot.  I fear that acad is heading for the boneyard though, to be replaced with an "inventor" like successor with adaptive history and 3d solid modeling.

ACAD is used heavily in architecture and the 2D drafting world where 3d is manytimes not as important.  What it doesn't do well is make changes easily.  Try changing a six deep boolean after 200 command lines later.   Inventor lets you do that but it is missing a few of the things I REALLY miss.  Like scale.  Once you set scale in IV ... that's it.  You can't easily resize your model but you can make fundamental changes in dimensions as long as those changes don't change things that are needed later.

 There are thousands of 2D and 3D ACAD LISP scripts that if some clever developer could figure a way to translate to IV ... they'ed be rich.

Still ... I have model WIP's in ACAD that I need to continue there so I guess I'll keep going with it as long as it's supported.

I agree that AutoCAD is reaching its used by date and from what I have seen and heard about Inventor I think this program will take its place. AutoCAD is great as a drafting tool for general drawing but its 3d capability can be quite limiting. Over the many years that I have used AutoCAD for 3d work I have come know the program very well and have developed many techiques for 3d work that only comes from years of practice. Throwing away what has been picked up in that time to learn another program seems quite daunting but I guess the newer programs are more intuitive and easier to work with now days. Until I feel that I am severely limited in my creative ability I will continue to use AutoCAD and in conjunction with Max I can do most things that I am called to do.

Mikebro;

I feel you brother.  Autodesk really needs to do some deep thinking before they dump their vector based systems and Inventor doesn't yet have a fully functional boolean suite.  All it has is intersections which in my estimation is a very poor showing.

Yeah there's still a few of us out here who can customise the hell out of the raw engine that AutoCAD is and outgun most other apps for repetitive tasks.

As a modeller, I use Inventor, Mechanical Desktop, Sketchup, ADT, Revit, ArchiCAD, Rhino and Solidworks.
It just depends on the job to hand.

Parametric functions are wonderful when you are always reworking or tweaking a model but sometimes you just need to be able to get down to the base level and control everything.

This is why AutoCAD survives. "User Friendliness" for most software means the programmer decided what you wanted to do and automated that without always giving you what your creative brain needed. I always know exactly what AutoCAD will and won't do.

I still would rather Boolean anything in AutoCAD before 3DSMAX!!!
And I LIKE Max!

Clever use of Boolean in AutoCAD can create some great solid models and is quite predictable. At each critical level of modelling I will create a copy and work on the copy, allowing me to always have a spare backup if I screw up. Every package that I have worked on has it strong and weak points. Organic modelling in Acad is virtually impossible yet extruding on a path and using Boolean operations can perform wonders in CAD. Because I do very little organic type modelling Acad can generally do everything that I want and of course is very accurate for mechanical creations.

With Acad your drawing work needs to be very clean. Often I will get 2D drawings from architects and draftsmen who draw with lines over the top of other lines and as you well know Acad will not revolve or extrude a closed shape with hidden lines embedded in there somewhere. Sometimes I can spend 20 min looking for a problem within a shape only to find there is a tiny line hidden in a corner somewhere or a line will overlap preventing extrusion. Good housekeeping and precise drawing techniques can prevent many of these problems though. I just need to educate the people who send me their drawings for converting into 3D.

The customization is the key to fast modeling in AutoCAD. If you're good at writing AutoLISP or VBA code, you can get a lot of modeling done in a hurry. I've been using AutoCAD/AutoLISP since version 2.62. I almost exclusively use AutoCAD for solid modeling and Max for the rendering and animation. The only time the solid modeling is a real problem is on organic stuff, and the odd occassion when a really complex blend is required. You can usually work around the blend, but the organic stuff, well, you had better use a different package.

No.  It's for 2D unless somethings changed.  Check autodesk.com to be sure.

Not to sidetrack this thread too far, but everyone knows that the built-in Boolean functions inside of 3ds Max are fairly abyssmal. However, if you are looking for a top-shelf boolean solution for 3ds Max or Autodesk VIZ, then I would strongly encourage you guys to consider looking at Power Booleans 3 from nPower Software. These guys got right what Autodesk/Kinetix/Discreet/Autodesk Media & Entertainment could not - the tool is exceptionally powerful and predictable. They also offer a downloadable trial version from their site so you can see for yourselves.

I just wanted to let you all know that a real solution does exist outside of AutoCAD itself.

I have been using AutoCAD since Rel 9 and was introduced to Max back when it was 3D Studio.  I have ADT 2006 and Max 7, but still prefer to do most of my modeling in good old AutoCAD!

Hi,

i am an architect who started using Autocad 6 believe it or not, that was in 1989 on a 286 processors, an kept using it till these days, I know that there is far more advance 3d modeling software like max, that I use since 3ds ver 1 for dos, but Autocad to me is like being used to your wife for a long time, you know all the ins and outs of her so you can better live with it, as for me i use Autocad for 2d drafting and 3d modeling, then exporting it to max for final touches in modeling and bringing it to life, then sending t back to Autocad with Final toon from Final render, and i am happy of what i get, and here is an example of my work.

I still use Autcad daily for 3d projects.  I have been using it since version 9.  As one of your previous posts mentioned customization....it is true that you can speed your production by adding time-saving customization.

The only drawback to importing the dwg into a viz or max scene is the added geometry.  This may have been fixed in newer versions like Max6 or Viz2006 but You will find that your simple geometry (ie: boxes, cylinders, etc) created in Autocad, once imported to viz or max will have more triangulation of faces.  As a matter of fact, each face will become doubled.  I have found that it becomes dificult to map and use textures when that happens.  So, end result:  I use Autocad for modeling small projects.  Max and Viz are slowly becoming my starting point on larger models.

Hello. I am an intern with an architectural firm in Germany for the summer, and they need someone who knows how to make 3D renderings. For right now they need someone who can make chairs and tables and stuff like that for a program they are creating. Please e-mail me at <A href="mailto:Rybruscoe@hotmail.com">Rybruscoe@hotmail.com</A> and please send a portfolio so we can see what you have done. Thanks! -Ry

RyB;

Put it on the jobs board ... and it's always nice to put a general price range for the project bid.

Yes you can make mesh in autocad and also change mesh points like 3d max . but mesh work in cad is so ruf...then it is better then you make it in 3dmax.

Also an architect, I use Revit for design which exports to ACAD as an SAT or ACSII file. From that, I use Max 8.0 for modeling, which I am still trying to figure out. Revit is such a power tool for design, I would recommend it for any Architect or CGAI.

AutoCad LT is a "light" version of the main program. It is limited to the basics, mostly for 2D work.

I use it for architecture, but I want to use it for 3D modeling. I like autocad a lot more than 3Ds Max.  I don't have the money to buy a copy for my home computer.
