To be an Art Director means to be someone that know about the subjective world of art (it is what means "eye for art") and have ability to manage an artistic and technique team and put everithing together ( fotography, music, animation, acting, cenography, coreography etc) following conceptual lines. The Art Director need to know about art (all the ways that he can) , technique, know about many cultures, ways of life, Asthetics and will help much if he is an artist too, because he will know about produce art and will know how to think in a subjective way and live it. In a company an art director have to decide the conceptual lines, choose who will produce the artistic stuff, trade with that team, watch carefuly if the conceptual lines are followed well etc. I dont know well why people come here and say "i need an Art Director that knows to model in maya animate in xsi, compose in After FX, paint in photoshop, bla bla bla..." an art director doesnt need to be in a software cage or be associated with a software or hardware package, is good to know about tools but dont need to make the technical stuff at all, keep it in mind, maybe someday , people will ask the Art Director to clean the garbage, make phone calls, keep the office clean, wash the dogs, cook etc.... If you want a well done job, ask the right person to do the right job. Dinart Filho - Graduated Art Director and 3D modeler |
