Is there any way to protect gif-animations from theft?
Posted 09-Jun-2005 3:21 PM

Is there anyway to prevent people from rightclicking on
a gif animation and saving it to their PC?

I searched the net, and this is the information that I found:
Animated gif's can't be protected - if you do so, the resulting secured
image will only show the first frame of the animation.

You can use these two methods to help prevent theft of images.

1. Place a piece of text or an obstructive image 20-50% transparent onto each frame of the image. (Make sure you backup original to safe place)

2. Use this HTML code in your webpage to prevent "Save Picture As"

Hope that helps!

You can always import your gif into some flash editing software and export it as swf

Hi,

I'm a web developer and can tell ya, sadly there is no way to protect gif, jpgs, text or anything else posted directly on an html web page from being downloaded.  Even if you disabled the right click so someone can't do a "Save this image as...”, they can still view the source get the direct location and retrieve it from there. Assuming they have a little web programming savvy. If you save the images as Flash files and select "protect from import" when saving, that would make it much more difficult for someone, but not impossible.

Your best bet is to put a water mark in the images so they won’t want to use it as their own.

It's the same as with a car, if someone really wants to steal your car, they're going to no matter what precautions you take. But if you make if difficult, most will probably move onto the next because it's not worth the trouble.

Best of luck.

everything gets stored in Temp internet Files Folder. No matter if right click is disabled or not or flash or shockwave its just there and you can click and drag it out on the desktop (Quicktime, Flash, Shockwave, WMA, JPEG, GIF etc.)

Firefox can also disable the Javascript that makes the pic "protected from right-clicks"

it's a tough one, but the watermark solution seems the best at least for me

Yes, there is one hack-proof to keep people from taking your images posted ont he web--Dont post it. :)
Even in flash, you can screen capture an image and paste it into photoshop.

Anything that you really don't want people to have, just resize down the original and post smaller versions. Save as .jpgs and you protect the source.

I dont know if this'll work for an animated thing but you can place a transparent gif over single images then when they click and save its totally blank, and dont find out till later which helps .

In theory there should be a way to do it with animated gifs, but unsure., If their isn't maybe some clever programmer could make one? and sell it?

What was said about putting a transparent gif over the original... you can still take it from the source, I am a web developer too and I think I have found a way to hide the source. E-mail me at dorian_markovac@yahoo.co.uk

I found that with still images you use a water mark like the others said and also you can manipulate it in Photoshop and make the resolution just a hair above viewable where it looks good on site but when downloaded, saved or printed it will look too blurry for any use. As for the reuse on the intenet there is a service that Adobe offers for image pirecy, it is a bit costly but is your work worth it to protect it. It is a watermark company called DigiMark.

Of course if people use a screen capture utility the only way is to put a watermark all over it.
