Interactive 3D Renderer initialization failed

If upon starting your GMAX you get an error message like "Interactive 3D Renderer initialization failed. Please check your device settings by using the -H command line option", don't panic. It's not realy a problem. It is just a warning and it is giving you the solution at the same time.

What does it mean ? I means that the rendering driver you choose at the beginning isn't able to display correctly on your screen.

What's the solution ?

You can do it in 3 ways :

A) FROM INSIDE GMAX
===================================================
1) click in the top menu CUSTOMIZE
2) in that menu, click PREFERENCES
3) you will get a pop-up with a bunch of of options. Click the top one that says VIEWPORTS
4) in the bottom right corner, click the button CHOOSE DRIVER
5) another pop-up appears with choices of HEIDI, Direct3D and OpenGL. One should already be chosen. Choose another one.
6) click OK then the OK button of the other pop-up
7) if your viewport still doesn't work, try another driver.
8) if after trying all drivers it doesn't work, post a reply here indicating it.

B) FROM OUTSIDE GMAX
=============================================
1) find the shortcut you use click on to execute your GMAX(if you don't have one because you click on the GMAX program icon directly, then do create a shortcut)
2) do a right click on it and choose PROPERTIES in the menu that appeared
3) a pop-up will appear. Click the top tab SHORTCUT
4) in the TARGET field, you will have something like "YOUR DRIVE:\...\GMAX\gmax.exe"
5) before the ending double quote, add -H (dash H)
6) click OK
7) execute your GMAX via that shortcut you have just modified
8) the GMAX logo will appear. Wait a bit ...
9) another pop-up appears with choices of HEIDI, Direct3D and OpenGL. One should already be chosen. Choose another one.
10) click OK then the OK button of the other pop-up
11) if your viewport still doesn't work, try another driver.
12) if after trying all drivers it doesn't work, post a reply here indicating it.

C) NO CLUE ON HOW TO DO SOLUTION A OR B (risky solution so be ware)
=========================================================
1) start a text editor (Notepad will do nicely)
2) open the file ../gmax/gmax.ini or ../gmax/gamepacks/your_gamepack_folder/gmax.ini
3) do a FIND on "[WindowsState]"
4) the current rendering driver used will be coded as follow following that string of character you found

[WindowState]
GFXType=OpenGL

or

[WindowState]
GFXType=Direct3D

or

[WindowState]
GFXType=HEIDI

5) just replace your the value of GFXType by any of the three above that doesn't match what you already have.
6) save the file
7) start GMAX
8) if the screen is weird or blank or whatever, just close GMAX and choose another one.

Umm... yeah... I went into properties and under target I have exactly C:\gmax\gmax.exe and when I attempted to add -H it said this "The name 'C:\gmax\gmax.exe-H' specified in the Target box is not valid. Make sure the path or file name is correct." =( So it is still not working. And on top of that... after receiving the error message each time gmax closes itself.

You need to add a space into the path like so:

C:\gmax\gmax.exe -H

Not like you have it now:

C:\gmax\gmax.exe-H

My system is:

HP workstation xw4200, P4 3.20 gh(2 cpu) w/ 1024mb ram

Video:

Matrox Millennium P650 PCI1 128

I run dxdiag and direct3D works on both Phillips 190B Flat panels.

I try and run Gmax and get the error. I have selected every option but is simply will not run.

I have run acad 2000-2006 with no probs (2-d and 3-d renders) as well as other cad programs and several 3-d building designer programs.

suggestions?

What rendering driver did you have before ?

What rendering driver did you switched to ?

Which rendering driver did you not choose ?

I have the same problem with my Impossible Creatures Gamepack (from the RDN Companion tools) :(
But my normal gmax works perfectly well, can somebody help please? None of these solutions work on the gamepack

I updated that list up ahead.

Do the last step. Edit the gmax.ini inside your gamepack folder just like I instructed.

Hi there

since I update/grade my Computer to direct X 9c and to a Matrox G450 Dual Head (Win2k is the OS)

Gmax start with the following error Message:

Unable to Create Direct 3d Device for your 3d hardware, Please make shure you have the latest direct 3d ´version installed. Ahhm, I thougt 9c was the latest???. Anyway, is there any known issue with Matrox G450 and Gmax and DX9c??

Before I used the Matrox thing I use an even worse graphics card (ATI Rage 128) and GMAX work, but at that time I used DX8 on my machine.

At the end of all Gmax work with Open GL driver, but it's a mess to work with that settings. Each Action even on a low poly object takes hours to be done, even the selection of a simple vertice. Man, that cause a high waste of coffee and cigarettes ;-)

I know that Matrox Cards are not the "Ferraris" in 3d accelleration, but that slow?? It look to me more like a software rendering. By the way, the Direct X dialog tool passes everey test successfull.

Doing a <a href="http://groups.google.ca/groups?hl=en&lr=&num=100&q=directx+%2B%22matrox+g450%22+%2Bproblem&qt_s=Search">google search</a>, I have found references about your Matrox card having some problems :

ex: <a href="http://groups.google.ca/group/alt.comp.periphs.videocards.matrox/browse_frm/thread/bfbb23c3f2c991d1/1eaafc24735567d5?lnk=st&q=directx+%2B%22matrox+g450%22+%2Bproblem&rnum=14&hl=en#1eaafc24735567d5">Correct. Matrox states that their card does not use 3D hardware acceleration in 24-bit colour mode so don't ever expect acceleration in 24-bit mode.</a>

I suggest you ask Matrox or Microsoft about possible problems between Matrox and DirextX. I don't think it is an issue with GMAX>

Notepad is a standard Microsoft software in all Windows software. So if you cannot find it, that means you don't know your ways around Windows (no offense) so I suggest you ask whomever installed your PC to do it for you.

Thank-you so much! I was worried I'd never get this problem fixed! Then I got really worried when I typed it and it still didn't work. So I did a little experimenting and found you had to put a space between the .exe and -H. Thanks Again!

Glad to here how to edit preferences if need be. Thanks BrIce(bryce) heheee.

My Vidcard is open GL 256mb so that is what I chose and gmax has always worked well for me.
