gmax® free 3D modeling and animation tool
gmax® is a free 3D modeling and animation tool which requires registration for a free serial number which is emailed to you. The serial number expires occasionally, but a new one is sent to you each time you need it and request it. You will get the registeration code after installing gmax and then running it for the first time.
These instructions explain how to download and install the program, the help files, the tutorials, and the library. The trick is to get the various downloads unloaded into the proper folders so that they link together properly. The "help" and "turorial" files go into the "gmax" folder; but the "library" files go into the "maps" folder. (2005.02.23)

1. Under "gmax Downloads... gmax... minimum System Requirements:... 19.2MB", click "Free Download". This will download file "gmax12.exe".
2. gmax12_help.exe 15MB... Click "Download".
3. gmax12_tutorials.exe 14MB... Click "Download".
4. library.exe 2.8MB... Click "Download". This will download file "Library.exe".
Save these files anywhere you want on your computer. I created a new folder "GmaxDLs" inside the "My Documents" folder and saved the 4 files there.

After download, browse to and click "gmax12.exe" to begin installing Gmax.
"Setup". "Next". "I accept". "Next".
Leave Destination Folder as "C:gmax\".
Click "Next". "Next". "Finish".
....gmax12_help.exe to folder "gmax" at "C:gmax"....
After download, find and click "gmax12_help.exe".
This opens a "WinZip Self-extractor..." window.
Click on "Browse". Click on the plus sign (+) to the left of the "C:" hard drive.
Below the "C:" hard drive, click on the folder icon in front of "gmax". This will highlight "gmax". Click "OK".
Below "Unzip to folder:" should now display "C:gmax".
Click the "Unzip" button. Should display "3 file(s) Unzipped successfully". Click "OK".
Close the WinZip Self-extracter window by clicking "Close", or the "X" in the top right corner.
....gmax12_tutorials.exe to folder "gmax" at "C:gmax"....
After download, find and click "gmax12_tutorials.exe".
This opens a "WinZip Self-extractor..." window.
Click on "Browse". Click on the plus sign (+) to the left of the "C:" hard drive.
Below the "C:" hard drive, click on the folder icon in front of "gmax". This will highlight "gmax". Click "OK".
Below "Unzip to folder:" should now display "C:gmax".
Click the "Unzip" button. Should display "103 file(s) Unzipped successfully". Click "OK".
Close the WinZip Self-extracter window by clicking "Close", or the "X" in the top right corner.
...."Library.exe" to folder "Maps" at "C:gmaxMaps"....
*** Note: This File needs to be extracted in the "Maps" folder - NOT the "gmax" folder which the help and tutorials went into. ***
After download, find and click "Library.exe".
This opens a "WinZip Self-extractor..." window.
Click on browse. Click on the plus sign (+) to the left of the "C:" hard drive.
Below the "C:" hard drive, click on the plus sign (+) to the left of "gmax".
Below the "gmax" folder, click on the folder icon in front of "Maps". This will highlight "Maps". Click "OK".
Below "Unzip to folder:" should now display "C:gmaxMaps".
Click the "Unzip" button. Should display "26 file(s) Unzipped successfully". Click "OK".
Close the WinZip Self-extracter window by clicking "Close", or the "X" in the top right corner.

To run gMax, find and click "C:gmaxgmax.exe"
or click "Start > Programs > discreet > gmax > gmax"
You will see the "gmax: Welcome to gmax!" dialogue box where you will be prompted to get the "Registered User Identification Code". Click the "Go To" button.
Your browser should automatically open at page at TurboSquid.com.
Either login in or ...
Down below, fill in the "Create New Member Account" box and click the "Submit" button.
On the next page, fill in the "Manditory Fields:". Click the "Submit" button at the page bottom.
Your free registration key will be emailed to you immediately.
To activate gmax, copy the Registered User Identification Code from your email, paste it to the input field in the 'Welcome to gmax' screen and press the 'Continue' button.
I imagine the default choices on the next dialogue are best left alone.
In my case with an older Windows 98 computer ... (*) HEIDI .. (*) Software Z Buffer. Click "OK".
The gmax program should now be up and running. Click the top menu choice "Help", and then "Tutorials".
