Why pay tax to the US?
Posted 05-Mar-2002 10:22 PM

Why do people outsaide the US still have to pay tax to the US on their models?
If I were to sell something on ebay to someone who lived in the US, ebay would take their fee (and turbo squid takes 50%) but none of my money would have to be payed as tax other than in my country.

As well as this, there aren't any laws which state that you have to unless you're a US resident, so since turbo squid what answer this question after I emailed them, maybe someone else will be kind enough to?

Thanks

Kune

Under the Internal Revenue Code, income generated in the U.S. and transferred abroad is subject to a 30% tax withholding, unless the United States has a tax treaty with your country. If the U.S. has a tax treaty with your country, you may be entitled to a lower withholding rate or possibly a complete exemption. To find out the tax withholding rate for your country consult the withholding table on the Turbo Squid ‘Vendor FAQ’ page.

That means, for non us residents.
turbosquid has 50%... USA have 30%, so we got 20% only???
i don't think that is a good deal for us.

To keep it simple I think it works this way...

If you make a sale of an asset for $100...

TS (50%) = $50

US (30% of your income which is the other $50...) So,  0.30 * 50 = $15

What is left for you (barring any transfer/banking fees, etc) = $35

... At least that's how I see the basic process...

That is the safest & best way to do it, but you need to check that the embassy has an IRS section. If it has, you take your filled in form W7, your passport, and a letter that you can get from TS support, and they check the forms there & then, and send them off for you. At least that's what they did in the London Embassy for me.

If there is no IRS section, I think you can still get the notarised copy from the embassy, but you will have to pay for it ($30) and send the forms off yourself.  There is a whole forum devoted to this tax witholding, so you might want to read that before you start. A number of people, myself included, have detailed how they went about getting the ITIN.
