Airplane Tutorials
Posted 29-Apr-2004 2:08 PM

Hi guys!

I was wondering if any of you know some great airplane making tutorials? I would like some that cover from modeling it to making great colors and textures!

Sorry if you guys are tired of my questions.

Thanks!

I would suggest, checking into the sample files. Gmax tutorial for the P-38 is limited becasue the aircraft really sin't designed for export into FS. It has no moving parts named correctly but it does help a beginner to get to understand some of the functions of GMAX. I would also suggest a good look at the samples that MS provided. The three AI aircraft from FS2002/04 can give you a pretty good understanding of how MS did their aircraft. Also the Jenny sample in the gmax sdk is a goodie.

I just take a good look at what other's have done whether it's the textures or the model. FOr example, I just saw a neat trick by Bill Lyons on his Ryan ST where he put an N_Number (Gauge) on the control panel so that you can change it at will in the sim.
You can also get source files from places such as the great guys at:
Freeflight Design Shop

Hi!
I went to the link you had. But when I tried it, I only got the airplane I didn't get a tutorial on how to build it.

Can you please tell me where to find airplane tutorials?

Thanks!

Click on the "Tutorial" link at the bottom of the screen! There are MANY tutorials there, including mine on VC Gauge Lighting, but you do have to click on the links to find them...

I've seen several mentions related to the AI planes. I'd love to be able to open the MS AI Cherokee and remodel it to match the 1973 Challenger I partially own. Are the files for this model available anywhere? I have seen several mentions of them (as above for instance), but I have not been able to locate them. I don't want to do much, just add the rear windows, perhaps lengthen the fuselage if that is needed. I'd also like to add a strobe underneath and the strake on the rudder.

Thanks,

Thomas

It is not possible to modify a compiled .mdl file of an aircraft.

You must have the original source code for the model...

Heres a good tutorial that I found impressive;

http://www.simviation.com/gryphon/tutorials/gMax_00.htm

Also, FS Edge has some cool tutorials as well at his website. He now has a video tutorial on doing Lofting to make a propeller spinner. Its done pretty good.

Blue skies,
Bill

Thanks for the FFDS plug .. :)

At the FFDS tutorials page we try to either have, or link to the tutorials.

As for plane making tutorials:

the gmax P38 tutorial is useful in getting the "basics", although it doesn't, like it was mentioned, get you to a flying machine.

The 3DWorld FW190, ditto, except that it actually adds the prop and the landing gear.

The "Stupid Idiot's Guid to Making an Airplane in Gmax" is the best - that I've seen - tutorial.

From there, there are many good/excellent "piece" tutorials by Fr. Bill, Firestriker, FSEdge, Milton, etc., as well as good "tips"
