End User License Agreement FAQ

Model Usage Questions:

Question:
I see you have a model that is just what I need for my new film/print ad/game/game mod. What restrictions are there on my usage?

Answer:
Our goal is to allow you the most possible flexibility in using purchased models while protecting the interests of the model’s creator and the model’s future sales. Accordingly, when you are publishing, selling, or otherwise distributing your final product you cannot distribute the purchased model in a file format that is usable by any 3d application. The purchased model has to be incorporated into your final product in a manner that the end user of it cannot access the purchased model itself. For example, you should publish your final product in a proprietary, native file format so that the users of your final product cannot access the model by itself. You must not distribute with your final product a folder (e.g. a .zip file) that includes the purchased models by themselves.

Question:
Are the usage rights for a 3d model ever different than the standard license?

Answer:
For a small number of models, the seller has included a different license in the product description, possibly as a file that can be downloaded for your review before purchase.

Question:
Do I have to pay royalties to the creator of a model every time my final product, which includes the creator’s model, is distributed?

Answer:
No. All royalties are paid at time of purchase. After making the initial royalty payment, you obtain the perpetual usage rights for the model royalty free. However, your purchase is bound by the other restrictions for model usage and does not include the right to transfer the ownership of the model to someone else, resell the model, or publish it in any file format that is usable by a 3d application. Please see the other answers in this FAQ for more details on the permitted usage of purchased models.

Question:
Can I buy a model from TurboSquid, then use it to render out imagery for use anywhere within a book, poster, t-shirt or other item for sale commercially?

Answer:
Yes. The rendered image in these cases does not constitute redistribution of the asset in a proscribed manner. Public display and performance rights are standard to the default license agreement between vendors and rights purchasers.

Question:
I want to buy a model from the TurboSquid library and convert it into a physical 3D object for sale elsewhere. Is this legal?

Answer:
Yes, unless the seller has different licensing terms in the product description, this use is allowed under the standard license.

Question:
Once I buy a model from TurboSquid, may I change it for my use?

Answer:
Absolutely, so long as the modified asset is used within the scope of the license agreement. The only exception here is that simply because you’ve purchased the model and changed it around (by applying textures, adding details to it, etc.), this does not grant you the right to re-distribute and sell that model as your own.

You may use the purchased model as a template for your own, new model. For example: You want to include an elephant in a video game that you are developing. You may purchase a high resolution model of an elephant and build your own low resolution model of the elephant using the purchased as a template.

Question:
I want to buy a model, but I need someone to render it for me.

Answer:
TurboSquid does not provide these type of services. However, TurboSquid can refer you to a certified service provider who will charge a reasonable rate for rendering services. These service providers are partners of TurboSquid and provide qualified work.

Question:
Is software royalty free?

Answer:
All software usage is bound by the End User License Agreement of the particular software itself.

Question:
If I buy a model to use as a template (a reference to guide the placement of my polygons and curves) for another model I’m going to build from scratch, how can I use the new model? Can I sell the new model I make on TurboSquid?

Answer:
Using models purchased or downloaded from TurboSquid as templates for new models is very common. You are welcome to do this and can use the new model that you made, or derived, from a model on TurboSquid in all of the normal ways you can use the purchased model. You will not, however, be able to resell the new model. By using the first model as a template for the creation of a new model, the new model automatically is a derivative of the purchased model. Derivatives of models must not be sold on TurboSquid or used in any manner inconsistent with the TurboSquid End User License Agreement.
