In 1863, The little known U.S.S. Alligator, The Union Navy's Secret Submarine went down in a storm off Cape Hatteras. The Submarine designed by Brutus de Villeroi, The Alligator, was equipped to hold 20 men and used a lockout diver’s airlock so divers could recover wrecks or attach bombs that could be detonated remotely by wire. Advanced for it's time with successful trials, the sub used tanks of compressed air for adjusting the attitude of the boat and an air scrubbing system.
