Description
By 1942 the PZ38 tank had become obsolete. But
the chassis was an excellent platform for adapting to
other roles. Large numbers of 76.5mm guns were
captured during the invasion of Russia. They were
re-chambered for the German 75 mm round and
mounted on various platforms including the PZ38
chassis. This last variant of the Marder series had
the engine moved to mid-chassis allowing a lower
silhouette. Thus the ‘M’ in the naming convention.
The forward hull MG was removed and an MG34
or MG42 was carried in the fighting compartment
in the rear. 975 were built between 1943
and 1944.
