U.S. Army intelligence reports in April of 1942 pointed to a need for a more powerful tank destroyer. In October of 1942 work began on modifying two 90mm antiaircraft guns for use as a tank gun. One was fitted to a modified m10 turret and another was fitted to a new, better balanced and power traversed turret. The latter proved more satisfactory and was approved by December of 1942. The new turret was to be fitted to the m10 chassis. This turned out to be difficult because of a shortage of m10 chassis. Some of the new turrets were fitted to m4a3 ‘Sherman’ chassis. This was to be designated the M36B1. Canadian M10 chassis were used and designated the M36B2.
