In 1942 the US Armored Forces realized a need for a close support tank to coordinate with medium tank battalions. A new open top turret with a M2 75mm howitzer was designed and fitted to the Stuart tank body. 1,778 of these vehicles were made and saw service in the European and Pacific Theaters. The only drawback to this design was that is could not carry large amounts of ammunition. To offset this, an ammunition trailer was usually towed behind.
