The Steyr AUG Armee Universal Gewehr - Universal Army Rifle is a select fire assault rifle in a bullpup layout. The AUG was adopted by the Austrian army as the StG77 in 1977, and has also found acceptance by the armed forces of Australia, Argentina and New Zealand, Bolivia, Ecuador, Ireland, Luxembourg, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Pakistan.

The AUG is a clever combination of innovative ideas assembled into one sound package. The bullpup layout, with the trigger unit ahead of the magazine and firing mechanism, allow a relatively long barrel to be used without lengthening the whole rifle. The polymer housing is hard wearing and greatly reduces the weight of the rifle compared to metal construction. The integral low magnification optical sight greatly improves accuracy and targeting speed.

The rifle is equipped with a two stage trigger, pulling the trigger halfway produces single shots, all the way back for fully automatic fire. The Steyr AUG can be easily switched between left and right handed ejection to accommodate different shooters. The magazines are constructed from a clear polymer, making it easy to see the number of remaining rounds.

The Steyr AUG holds 30 rounds of 5.56X45 NATO ammunition in a detachable box magazine. It has an effective range of 300 metres and rate of fire of 680-850 rounds per minute.
