History

The Siemens Schuckert D.IV was a very late WWI fighter that entered service only months before the end of the war. The D.IV was based on the D.III and was arguably the best fighter plane developed during that conflict. Unfortunately, it saw service too late to have any effect. Despite a high maneuverability, speed, and general high altitude performance, D.III engines had a habit of seizing up after about 10 hours of service. This is believed to have been a result of the use of inferior lubricating oil used at the time. The aircraft was then cleared for flight. The D.IV was partially based on the D.II and had performance superior to the D.III. The order for the DIV was placed in March 1918 with the intention of building 280 of them. By the end of the war only 123 were completed.
