MiG 29K Naval Jet Fighter
The MiG29K is a navalized variant of the standard MiG29 Russian fighter, featuring a number of modifications to suit life at sea. These including folding wings (for ease of storage on board ships with limited space), an arrestor hook and a strengthened undercarriage (to withstand the impact of heavy deck landings).
India’s Mig 29Ks will complement the sixteen ordered back in 2004, of which initial deliveries began in early 2009. Thus, its final complement is set to total 45 aircraft and, to date, India is the only country to have this type of Mig 29 in service, bar Russia itself. Ultimately, India’s new naval strike force will operate off the country’s future aircraft carriers, currently being built and due to enter service in around five years.
Russia has supplied more arms to India than any other country, with total sales of in excess of $35bn over the last four or so decades.
