BMPT is newest Russian conception for armored vehicles: tank support combat vehicle (Boevaya Machina Podderzhki Tankov), intended to co-ordinate action supporting MBTs in conditions, when infantry participation isn't wanted, and decrease MBTs losses by neutralizing and defeating the enemy antiarmor-capable weapons, particularly its close-combat assets, as well as by repelling attacks of its helicopters and low-altitude aircrafts. Also the BMPT can be successfully used in combination of combat and march security elements, including peacekeeping and anti-terrorist operations.

A distinguishing feature of the BMPT is that its main armament system is arranged in a superstructure mounted on the turret roof. There are two coaxially-mounted 30mm 2A42 automatic guns; 7,62mm coaxial PKTM machinegun; 4 Ataka-T ATGMs on two launchers. In addition to turret armament there are two 30mm AG-17D automatic grenade launchers mounted on fenders. Crew of the BMPT consist of 5 men.

The BMPT will deliver Russian Army in 2009-2010.
