During the last two years of the Pacific war the most important Japanese fighter both in terms of numbers and performance was the Nakajima KI-84 Hayate, (Hayate meaning gale). The Hayate exhibited a superb performance, easilly matching that of the P47N and the P51H, equalling their speed but far more manouverable. In addition the hayate was heavilly armed and equipped with armour plate for protection, unusual in a Japanese fighter.
