In response to the heavy losses of merchant shipping during the first part of WW1, an extensive shipbuilding program was started and it was decided that ships would be of a simple design and standardized as far as possible with hulls and engines. These ships were referred to as 'Standard Built Ships.' All these vessels were given names prefixed with WAR. This model is of one of those ships, the SS War Viper.
