This model is accurate, well researched, and inspired by the Northampton State Mental Hospital in Northampton, Mass. However, its potential uses are not limited to an insane asylum... this structure is also suitable for use as a school, museum, library, historic hotel, or anything else you can think of!

This is a detailed model of an insane asylum, Kirkbride type structure, that was popular from the mid-late 1800s until most of them closed in the 1970s and 80s. These were the infamous state hospitals, housing thousands of mental patients at peak capacity, where shock therapy and lobotomies were common methods of treatment until the development of psychiatric drugs, beginning in the 1950s.

A Kirkbride building typically consisted of a four-story main administrative building (which included doctor's offices) flanked by identical three-story patient wings; one for men, and one for women. The building section directly behind the administration building contained the accute wards, where new patients were housed. The building also accommodated patient cafeterias, various therapy areas, and recreational facilities, such as a theater, art rooms, and sometimes bowling alleys.

The model looks very good at first glance. However it is really hard to work with.

Max file comes in really messed up in the way of erratic triangulation.

Obj file come in the same way with less erratic triangulation but lots of faces flipped the wrong way, creating more work than originally thought.

Material IDs or sub materials are at best weak. Sub-objects aren''t unified or capped so selecting by element is difficult.

Lightwave objects come in okay in Blender, again selecti
