The Chipmunk was designed by De Haviland''s Canadian subsiduary to replace the legendary De Haviland Tiger Moth as an elementary trainer. The prototype first flew in 1946 and in 1949 began to replace the Tiger Moth in RAF and RCAF flying schools. The RAF finally retired the last of its Chipmunks in 1995 although the Battle of Britain Memorial flight still operates two as part of the vintage aircraft flying program.
