This is the Russian three-engine jet transport aircraft identified with the NATO code “CODLING”. It was constructed to replace older propeller-driven Li-2 aircraft. The first prototype took off on 21 October 1966.

A series production of Jak-40, which lasted from 1967 to 1985, gave birth to the production of a thousand of this type of aircraft. The jet engines enable take-off and climbing even if one of them goes into a stall, as well as horizontal flight with only one working engine. The pressurised and air-conditioned cabin features high variability of inside arrangements. The Czech Air Force operates this type of aircraft in versions for 18 and 28 passengers.

The cockpit is equipped with a number of communication and navigational systems that are capable of controlling the aircraft under adverse flying conditions and at night. Examples of these systems are the automatic radio-compass ARK-10, radio-altimetre RV-5, the weather radar Groza 40, the VOR/ILS system, etc.
