This large, heavily built, herbivore heralds from the late Jurassic (150-155 million years ago) and grew to 23-26 ft long. The Stegosurus had a heavily rounded back, short forelimbs, head held low to the ground and a stiffened tail held high in the air. The single most distinctive feature were the plates found rising from the length of its back, terminating in two pairs of defensive spikes (four pairs in some species).
