Because the Luchs (Lynx) Pz2 reconnaissance vehicle was too expensive to make, alternatives were pursued. The now outgunned Pz38(t) was still an excellent platform to modify for secondary roles. The original turret was removed and a Hangelafette 38 turret (also used on the
Sd Kfz 234/1 armored vehicle) was substituted. The screen on the top of the turret was to stop grenades from being thrown inside. 50 to 70 were built during the war.
