The Leaning Tower of Pisa is the landmark of the town of Pisa, Italy. The building’s first stone was laid on 9th August 1173, it was planned to be a freestanding bell tower.
But as soon as construction had reached the 3rd floor, the tower began to lean in a south-easterly direction. After numerous building interruptions, the belfry was also finally completed in 1372, with the upper floors being erected to compensate for the tilt.
