Cultural Description:
The primary characteristic is the widening of the blade to a projecting point on one side next to the hilt. The point of having a wavy blade is to increase the 'draw' of the blade as it cuts. If you push a blade against your hand you have to push very hard, but if you slide it across you don't have to push hard. A curved blade is thought to make it easier to create draw across the surface to be cut. Blades vary widely in form and size, some krises weighing only a couple of ounces and others running to several pounds. The better blades are of laminated construction, often using meteoric iron, which with its high nickel content, produced a silvery pattern. From the Philippines through Indonesia, all have this shape, with wavy or straight blades. It's usually sheathed with woven reeds to allow it to be used by just cutting through the sheath without even removing it in a hurry.
