MRAP vehicles usually have 'V' shaped hulls to deflect away any explosive forces originating below the vehicle, thereby protecting the vehicle and its passenger compartment. Typically these explosions are from land mines, but they can also be IEDs. This design dates to the 1970s when it was first introduced in 1978 with the South African Buffel armoured personnel carrier. Derivatives of these vehicles have since been used by various military forces around the world.

The M1114 is the latest Enhanced Capacity Vehicle (ECV) version of the US Army's AM General High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) fitted with a passive up-armouring package developed by the O'Gara-Hess & Eisenhardt Armoring Company.
Some 1,700 M1114 vehicles have so far been built for the home and export markets with production scheduled to continue for some years.
This up-armouring package provides the occupants with protection from 7.62mm armour piercing attack through a full 360º, 155mm artillery bursting overhead and under body blast. The M1114 can be fitted with a wide range of weapon systems on the roof, including 7.62mm or 12.7mm machine guns or a 40mm automatic grenade launcher.
Standard equipment on the M1114 includes automatic transmission, power steering and a heavy duty air conditioning system.
The US Air Force has a similar vehicle designated the M1116 which is used for security police; civil engineer; and explosive ordnance disposal base recovery after attack missions.
