The SX250 was mostly seen serving with the PLA artillery troops for artillery gun hauling. It is also used as the chassis of several weapon systems including the Type 81 multiple rocket launcher (MRL) and HQ-61A surface-to-air missile system. The truck is also available in heavy equipment transporter (HET) tractor and workshop variants. In the early 1990s the truck was renamed Shaanqi SX2150 under the new motor vehicle designation system.

Currently there is still a large number of the SX2150 in the PLA service. These trucks are expected to be replaced by the new generation Shaanqi SX2150K and SX2190 in the future.
