The BITMAP file can be used in some ways in 3D Studio Max. Such as:-

1) for Displace modifier
2) as Bump Map
3) as Reference for modeling a Max Candle Stands (though front profile only).

Also, STL (STereolitho) file can be imported into 3dsmax. But because of high poly its vertex should be welded (quick weld) while importing and/or optimized after importing.
