The Class 58 entered service with British Rail in 1982 as a heavy freight hauler. After 20 years of steady, reliable service EWS withdrew the class. In 2000, 30 of them were sent abroad, hired to France, the Netherlands and Spain. The latter two countries are still using theirs. Those remaining in the UK are currently in long term storage.
