| The AK-47 is probably the most famous and prolific small arm in the world today. It is a gas operated, select-fire assault rifle chambered for the 7.62x39mm cartridge. Manufactured in dozens of countries and used in hundreds, it is estimated over 90 million AKs have been manufactured in the last 50 years. The AK-47 is an amalgam of previous features and solutions, combined into a reliable, deadly, and most of all easy to produce package. The extreme ruggedness and reliability of this weapon has enabled the AK to remain effective in countless warzones since its introduction. Ergonomics and pinpoint accuracy are not its strong points however. The AK-47 weighs 3.8kg unloaded, and 4.3kg loaded with 30 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition. It has a rate of fire of 600rpm and an effective range of 300 metres. |
