Northrop-Grumman is in the final stages of testing it's new X-47B Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAV) before turning it over to the U.S. Navy. More and more 'Unmanned' aircraft are being purchased by the military (more unmanned than manned are currently being purchased) as human pilots are rapidly being taken out of the chain.
The X-47B is 38 feet in length, has a 62 foot wingspan and will cruise at .45 mach (350-400mph) with a range of 2100 nautical miles. It's top speed is not being provided other than to say it is 'high subsonic'
Armed with 2 JDAM (Joint Direct Attack Munitions) which places a 500-2000 pound 'dumb bomb' onto a precision guided (inertial guidance coupled with GPS navigation) system, the X-47B can fly to within 15 miles of it's target (which can be fixed or moving) launch it's weapons, turn around and head home. The JDAM's are relatively inexpensive ($70,000 each) and pinpoint accurate.
JDAM's have already been successfully used with a variety of aircraft (B-52, B-1, F-15, F-16, F-18, F-22, F-117 and others) and have performed very well.
A newer version, the X-47C is being worked on and will have a much larger wingspan (almost 3 times the wingspan at 172 feet) as well as a much larger payload for fuel and weapons...
