History
The Alenia C-27J Spartan is a medium sized military transport aircraft based on Alenia Aeronautica's G.222 but with engines and systems of the Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules.
The Alenia C-27J Spartan was selected as the Joint Cargo Aircraft (JCA) for the United States military in 2007. It was the winner of a JCA competition between Alenia plus Lockheed Martin and Raytheon. When Raytheon lost they staged a protest but the GAO denied their complaint allowing the procurement of the C-27 to go forward.
The C-27 has a maximum payload of 25,000 pounds. The aircraft can be configured for any of a number of missions including troop transport, medevac, airdrop, or cargo. It is capable of long range and important STOL capability.
The C-27 is not only used in the United States but also has been ordered by the militaries of Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Morocco, and Romania.
