The Hong-6 (H-6) bomber is a Chinese copy of the Russian Tupolev Tu-16 (NATO codename: Badger) twin-engine, medium-range, subsonic bomber. Built by Xi’an Aircraft Industrial Corporation (XAC), the aircraft is available in a number of variants for strategic strike, tactical strike, reconnaissance, refuelling tanker, UAV carrier, electronic intelligence (ELINT), and aero engine testbed roles. China is the only country in the world that still deploys the Tu-16/H-6 bomber in operational service. For more than three decades, the H-6 remained the backbone of the PLA’s long-range strike fleet. The failure in finding a suitable successor may force the PLA to continue operating this 40-year-old design beyond 2010.
