| The SCAR (SOF Combat Assault Rifle) is a modular rifle manufactured by Fabrique Nationale de Herstal for the U.S. SOCOM SCAR competition. The aim of the competition was to find a new rifle for Special Forces, and had a number of requirements. The SCAR is available in two main versions; the SCAR-L fires 5.56x45mm NATO from M16 magazines, and the SCAR-H fires the more powerful 7.62x51mm NATO from newly designed 20 round magazines. A variety of different barrel lengths are available for each calibre, allowing the SCAR to fill roles from CQB to sniping. The SCAR features a full length picatinny rail on the top of the aluminium receiver, two side mounted rails and a bottom one for mounting grips or handguards. The standard iron sights can fold down to allow unobstructed use of optics and accessories. This variant is a SCAR-L in 5.56mm calibre with the mid-length 351mm barrel. It has a rate of fire of 600 RPM, and holds 30 rounds in a detachable box magazine. The SCAR-L weighs 3.5kg empty. |
