The basic elements of a blacksmith's workshop: an anvil, a hammer and a set of tongs. Though simple, these tools have aided man in the melding of metal. Free standing anvil may be fixed to a log or bench or it may be upended and used to bend iron rod into hoops. Hammer is used to work the iron and to forge joints. Tongs are used to hold and transport hot metal and coals.
