MIR is a self-propelled Deep Submergence Vehicle. Usually the MIR-1 submarine submarine is used for scientific research. The project was initially developed by the Russian Academy of Sciences. In July 2008 both Mirs initiated a two-year expedition to Lake Baikal, the world's largest freshwater reservoir.
