The Potala Palace is located in Lhasa. The name Potala means “pure land of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara“. From 1642 until 1959, during the rule of the Ganden Podrang, this enormous building was the official residence of the Dalai Lama. The Potala Palace stands on Mount Mar-po-ri (Red Mountain); it rises 130 metres into the air and overlooks the Tibetan capital city.
