The original design
was called the ‘Ferdinand’. After the battle of Kursk,
they were recalled and modified and received the
name ‘Elefant’. Extra armor, an MG 34 in the hull,
wider tracks and installation of a commander’s cupola.
Despite its drawbacks of being too slow, the ‘Elefant’
was a very formidable design. ‘Elefant’ might well
have been the most successful tank destroyer
employed during the war, having an average ratio
of approximately 10:1.
