The story: The corner tower (turrets), not known to many people though, is probably the most complecated and beautiful ancient Chinese building. It even has an legend of itself in the splendid world of Chinese architecture.Emperor Zhu Di of the Ming Dynasty (1368 -1644) dreamed an exquisite turret in Heaven. God told him it is a celestial building with 9 beams, 18 pillars and 72 ridge poles. When he awakened, He ordered the country's building talents to build such an tower in three month. But none of the architects knew how to do it. not long before the time limit was up, the architects were ready to be punished(beheaded). Then, the God of Carpenters, Lu Ban descended to earth disguised as an old man selling katydids. One of the workmen noticed that the cage of one of the katydids was very delicately made and looked similar to the emperor’s description of the turret. Following the style of the cage, they worked day and night and soon completed the four turrets at the corners of the palace walls. |
