Early in the war it was realized that a self propelled artillery unit for troop support was needed. It also needed to be armored and fully tracked. The M3 chassis was used. The M7 was put into production in 1942 and first saw action in North Africa. It was so successful that the British wanted 5,500 of them. Although they never got that many. For logistical reasons the British eventually replaced the 105mm with their own 25 pounder gun and renamed it the ‘Sexton’. The M7 was a successful design and was used up to the Korean war. The name ‘Priest’ was coined because of the pulpit looking tower for the 50 Cal Machine Gun. 3,490 M7s were built.
