| The Heckler & Koch Mk23 Mod 0 is a handgun consisting of a semi-automatic pistol derived from the H&K USP, a laser aiming module and a suppressor. The Mk23 was H&K’s entry in the OHWS (Offensive Handgun Weapon System) competition, which aimed to produce an offensive handgun for the USSOCOM (United States Special Operations Command). The Mk23 is chambered for the venerable .45 ACP cartridge, which has considerable stopping power. The .45 ACP cartridge is ideal for a suppressed weapon as it is inherently subsonic, so it suppresses well and retains its stopping power. The Mk23 is intended for use with special high-pressure .45 +P match grade cartridges. The weapon was found to be extremely reliable in testing, capable of firing tens of thousands of rounds without a barrel change, even when subjected to harsh conditions such as submergence in water, mud, dirt and snow. However, there has been some criticism that the Mk23 is relatively large and heavy for a handgun. The Mk23 Mod 0 package includes a suppressor developed by Knight’s Armament Corporation, and a Laser Aiming Module developed by Insight Technologies. The LAM can project either a visible laser dot or an infrared laser visible only through night vision gear. The Mk23 holds 12 rounds in a detachable box magazine and has an effective range of about 50 metres. |
