What it is: A concept two wheeled vehicle built to address the needs of cities in the future. Based on a segway platform, it can turn on a dime and can be driven manually as well as autonomously via global positioning systems.
The model in the Maya native format and was rendered using mental ray material x shaders. No out-of-the-box plugins were used. Model is mostly quads.
The model is also rigged. Rigs can be found under the extra attributes tab under 'magic control attributes'. Set driven keys control the lights, the vehicle 'balancing', and 'get up and go'.
The wheels animated by a rotation controller. This stationary controller always rotates in the positive direction so that as the car moves forward, the wheels will always move forward, regardless of the direction the vehicle is traveling. Many other animations you get have this problem, the expression is based on vector, so as soon as the car turns the wheels slow down, stop, and start moving backward because the x or z vector in the expression becomes negative. The setup is simple and already done for you, you can simply change the animation in the graph editor to suit your animation needs.
You can also rotate the drive animation controller and the wheels will counter rotate due to an expression programmed in. This also helps the vehicle turn more realistically as the outside turning wheel will turn faster than the inside turning wheel because the rotateY attribute and the translateZ attribute are blended.
